| 2000 There was an MLM setup for financial counseling where my retirement $ were. Several great friends in the organization, and I qualified for securities & insurance sales with Utah, taking 6 hours of tests in SLC suburbs. Attended conventions and learned the business. The market went south that spring. Decided not to be an investment adviser. Now I either have to go back to work or die sooner. But I have found something I am good at - NOT WORKING! Ran a phase of the 2000 US Census in Utah - all land south of Provo suburbs - but only 10% of state population. Interesting challenge. Had to teach a class for a week in Cedar City in Feb (Cedar is 50 miles away, but almost 3000 feet higher). Could not leave St George until 10pm, then drove in thunderstorm which became thunder snow (whiteout), and have had few tougher drives in my life. Got a free week at the Vic Braden Academy, and joined the club - due to incidence of Snowbirds (people who live as far north as Idaho, but spend winters in St George) - a one year membership worked for two years. Then the tab stopped fitting my budget. [Born on the east coast and lived there for my first 30, then moved to Minneapolis for the next 30. If I live till 90, I am due to move to Hawaii. I love this place. Fun to improve house and grounds within my budget. I can roam desert within five miles and climb above 10,000 feet within fifty.] Don and Kathy visited separately - Don for several weeks, Kathy for one. Discussed his stage plans for senior year - he was directing Mousetrap and was thinking of the Stewpot role in South Pacific. I said he could be the lead, Emile. Also suggested a Bloody Mary. Guess what came to pass? Kathy (she is at NYU Tisch School) and I both flew into MN to cheer his Enchanting Evening. A friend from Honeywell in the 1970s had problems with her husband of 25 years and migrated to St George before Xmas. When Carole (B in 1973 at-work saga) arrived, she called 433 from the motel. She had come from Houston with some gentlemen who felt she had promised them $7,000. Unfortunately, she had no available funds. Thus, they looked to me. I felt as though I was in a mystery novel. What to do? I applied arithmetic to check reason- ableness. Then, I faced them down with $3,000 as a max. It worked - Whew! She got sick, went to a local hospital - arrangements for independence, but had to enter an assisted living residence. Husband appeared: went on medication, they got back together and returned to TX in Feb. She went into coma and died in Aug 2001. |

| 1999 I would work at the Post Office from 1030pm till 7am on a machine now known to be a very effective spreader of anthrax within the free world, then read the morning paper before trying to sleep. Work gave me about $100 take-home but with stock market activity, my 24-hour take ranged between -$900 and +$1100. This helped convince me I should let investments feed me instead of work to feed my investments. Thought it would be great to live right on the edge of Zion Park, but logic intruded. At 70, when the car does not start, how about a 40-mile tow to the nearest garage (TOLL CALL)? Luck was good. A friend donated a 1990 Jeep Cherokee to me as she bought her new wheels! Most home search through the Internet, then flew to Utah in April to check available homes. Bought one a block from LDS Temple in St George. I quit the PO, sold 325, and evacuated to Utah with Kathy & Don as my movers after their schools let out. I owe them a lot. Kathy and/or I drove the Jeep and a Ryder truck while Don rode shotgun wherever the driver had greatest need (AND babysat Cat). We made it halfway to Des Moines before Jeep had a flat. A state trooper did most of the work to change it - luck is neat! They hung around for two weeks helping me set up, exploring the neighborhood, and enjoying 100- degree-plus weather. I taxied them to Vegas for the return plane, then settled down to life with Cat. Come wintertime, I drove to MN, and kids and I came back for a few days at 433 prior to their flight back. |
